Linking with the Wales Curriculum 2008

Designed to inspire a life-long interest in the great outdoors and a deep respect for its resources on which we all depend, Discovering the Environment offers an exciting context for developing a wide range of skills across the 2008 Wales Curriculum in English, Welsh, Science, Geography, PSE and PE, as well as in the cross cutting Education for Sustainable Development & Global Citizenship (ESD&GC) curriculum. To meet the needs of the youngest learners and their teachers, there is a complete set of materials for the new Foundation Phase.

Based on the key Countryside Code message, Respect Protect Enjoy, children and young people are encouraged to take responsibility for the environment, including the wider countryside; to discover and experience its riches first-hand, and to value what could be lost if it is not protected, respected and enjoyed.

Through a series of activities designed to make best use of the teaching opportunities provided by the hands-on immediacy of outdoor learning, children and young people are helped to think critically and understand the connections between the choices they make and the consequences of those choices for the natural world, and for other people.
